Best Practice Project - Silicone Ice Cube Trays

From idea silicone ice cube trays

Apprentice project 2025/26

At RICO, training young professionals has always been a priority. This year's apprentice project impressively demonstrates the potential of our next generation—and how much future there is in toolmaking and silicone processing.

From planning to the finished product

The project goal was clearly defined: to develop and produce a functional ice cube tray made of silicone. Our apprentices went through the entire product development process – from the initial concept to the design of the tool to the finished molded part.

The focus was particularly on:

  • Brainstorming and designing the mold
  • Designing and laying out the injection molding tool
  • Selecting the right material
  • Production in our own technical center
  • Quality and functional tests

The result was a complete apprentice project that combines real-world experience with state-of-the-art technology.

Silicone – a versatile material

High-quality silicone from WACKER was provided to our apprentices for the project.

Silicone offers the perfect properties for this type of product:

  • Heat resistant – ideal for baking
  • Cold resistant – suitable for deep freezing
  • Flexible and durable
  • Food safe and easy to clean

This makes the material suitable not only for ice cubes, but also for creative applications in the kitchen.

Tool design as a core element

A particular highlight of the project was the complete design of the tool by our apprentices. This brought together technical understanding, precision, and teamwork. The trainees learned how challenging and fascinating tool development is – a central pillar of our core competence.

Live production at the trade fair – a complete success

A real highlight: the ice cube molds were not only successfully manufactured in-house, but also produced live at the trade fair – and flawlessly at that.

This allowed our apprentices to demonstrate directly how reliably the tool works and how professionally the project was implemented. The positive response from trade fair visitors confirms the high standard of training at RICO.

Shaping the future together

The finished product is more than just an ice cube tray. It is a sign of how committed, talented, and solution-oriented our apprentices are – and how important practical training is at RICO.

We are proud of the result and look forward to accompanying the next generation in toolmaking and silicone processing on their journey.
